1/9/2024 0 Comments Omega 9k vs rugged obsidian 9![]() Now I do have some specialty cans that are welded and glad I have them but for a SMG can, I'd go serviceable all day especially when there are readily available options like the Obsidian 9 and Griffin Armament options. How much easier is it to get a suppressor serviced that can be taken down vs one that is completely welded? You can only re-weld metal a few times.Ĭall me paranoid, but I personally prefer a completely serviceable unit for maintenance, future proofing and possible legal changes. Think if all new suppressor manufacturing was prohibited to civilians today.so you could only have what is out there like MG's. The design of the MK9K allows the inner core to be replaced if damaged or for future proofing. Dater mentioned to me that back in '86 some thought the ban on MG's would also include suppressors so no new ones could be made. I've also had an MK9K blow up and due to the design, the outer tube was unscathed. Sure you can plug it up but I personally prefer to be able to scrap crap off directly if at all possible. The inner tube diameter has shrunk by the ports as well. View QuoteI never shoot cast lead and you can see my ports are filling up. Yes, and I acknowledge that in the thread I referenced above. The design from Curtis Tactical eliminates the need for an inner tube as the baffles are threaded together. I plan on keeping it at home on my CZ Scorpion and it'll play around on my Staccato and CZ P10c. I did a ton of research before buying and all signs pointed back to the Obsidian 45 for a pistol/modular can. I'm betting it will be heavier than what I have as well by comparing to the MK9K's I have. Rugged Obsidian 45, Rugged Oculus 22, and YHM Resonator R2 so all my bases are covered. So yes, it comes apart for cleaning but still using aluminum so no ultrasonic or harsh chemicals. You should never use solvents that contain ammonia, including Īccording the manual, " keep in mind the components are manufactured of aircraft grade aluminum. "Not a picture but it looks like there is a PDF manual on the GSL site now and it has a disassembly diagram in the manual showing how they are using encapsulated baffles inside the inner tube. View QuoteYes, and I acknowledge that in the thread I referenced above. but it shouldnt matter if you are using on FNX45. If its smaller pistol can, they might use the alpha thread which is 1.125x28. The Obsidian9 comes completely apart like mine and you can use it on a pistol. Many like Deadair, YHM adopted it on their rifle cans. My new can on the right is all SS baffle core that threads together and Titanium endcaps and tube so easy to maintain. That inner core is not user serviceable and made from aluminum so can't put in an ultrasonic cleaner and can't use harsh chemicals. ![]() The Obsidian 9 just checked all the boxes I was looking for in a handgun/pcc can. ![]() Original MK9K on the left and note that the ports are building up with crud. I had it narrowed down to: Q Erector 9, Rugged Obsidian 9, DA Wolfman, and Omega 9k. It is shorter, lighther than the MK9K in the middle and seems just as quiet. ![]() Picture below is my CMMG RDB, comparing my new Curtis Tactical can that is made out of better materials than the MK9K and fully serviceable and maintains backward compatibility to my MK9K mounts. I personally wouldn't get any 'pistol caliber' can that isn't user serviceable.įor a SMG can, my personal favorite has always been the Gemtech MK9K but it is heavy and a true SMG can and too heavy for pistol use. I guess you could Rocksett them together, and risk using the warranty.Īlternately, I'm more than happy to watch while you use my MG to experiment whether Rocksett works. For your first 9mm can, I would recommend the Rugged Obsidian 9 as it is modular AND completely serviceable. Not sure if the outer section warped, or the threads between the two loosened, but yeah. The heat will affect the sections differently, and VIOLA! Baffle and end cap strike. Don't do 1000 rounds of magdumps as fast as you can change mags, with BOTH sections of the can attached. Hell, he got the front half so hot that the high temp cerakote looked to have burned off.It was fun though!Ī few of you guys were impressed I mangled the baffles of a 45 can, with a 9mm.Īnd the cerakote didn't LOOK gone, it WAS gone. Midlandshooter royally screwed his up doing a bunch of mag dumps with a full auto 9mm and they simply replaced what needed replacing and sent it back. Rugged also has a throw it off a mountain and they'll still fix it or replace it warranty. ![]()
